Summer Camp at Bedford Academy
May 6 2010

The Grade Ones have been learning about the Mi'kmaq culture as part of their Social Studies curriculum. They discussed many aspects of traditional Mi'kmaq culture, such as spirituality, food, crafts, hunting, tool-making and legends. Guests Jim Maloney and Bridget Stevens visited the class to help the children realize how the traditional culture fits in today's Mi'kmaq society. Both Jim and Bridget wore ceremonial clothing to show the children how animals are an integral part of the culture and how much respect is accorded to them. They demonstrated dancing and drumming as would be seen at a pow wow and talked about many of the customs of these celebrations.

The children have been studying the art of Mi'kmaq artist, Alan Syliboy who used the petro glyphs (rock drawings) created by his people as his inspiration. The children created their own paintings in his style. These paintings will be on display along with the children's writing about what they have learned about the Mi'kmaq culture.
